Description

As medical providers we have a goal of reducing pain and suffering. To achieve that goal we use opioid analgesics, non-opioid Analgesics, and other modalities. This program will discuss the indications, contraindications, benefits, and risks of various forms of analgesia.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for providers who manage patient pain

Learning Objectives: At the end of the educational program, the learner will be able to:

  • Define the risks and benefits of opioid analgesics
  • Apply strategies to mitigate the risk of opioid dependency
  • Employ appropriate analgesics based on individualized patient needs

Richard Lawhern, PhD

Dr. Lawhern is a non-clinician subject matter expert on US and Canadian public health policy for regulation of prescription opioid pain relievers and of clinicians who employ opioids in managing severe pain for patients. He is a healthcare writer and moderator for online peer-to-peer patient support groups.

Stuart Wasser, MD

Stuart Wasser, MD

Dr. Wasser is an internist practicing in addiction medicine in Rockville Centre Long Island. He is board certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American board of Addiction medicine and practices in both office and clinic-based settings while also doing liaison addiction medicine consultation at Mount Sinai-South Nassau hospital.
