Learning Objectives: At the end of the educational program, the learner will be able to:

  • Outline the systemic and local risk factors for first metatarsal diabetic foot ulcers and employ ways to mitigate these factors in our at-risk patients.
  • Distinguish the biomechanical etiologies that contribute to first metatarsal diabetic foot ulcers to determine the most appropriate surgical course of action.
  • Extrapolate conservative and various surgical prophylactic options and their roles to mitigate and prevent first metatarsal diabetic foot ulcers secondary to rigid, semi-rigid, and flexible deformities.

    About the Speaker:

    Elizabeth Sanders, DPM, FACFAS, DABPM

    Dr. Sanders is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Boston University School of Medicine. She graduated from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine. She completed her residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Boston Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in foot and ankle advanced reconstructive surgery at University Hospitals in Chardon, Ohio. Dr. Sanders completed a mini fellowship in external fixation at the Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics in Kurgan, Russia. She has given numerous lectures and presentations on innovative surgical techniques, emphasizing limb salvage and reconstructive surgery nationally and internationally.
