  • Learning Objectives: At the end of the educational program, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss contribution of social determinant of health in wound healing
  • Outline important decision-making factors to optimize wound healing
  • Review key updates from the 2023 IWGDF/IDSA guidelines
  • Understand current best practices for diagnosis and treatment
  • Describe the guiding principles of charcot fixation and reconstruction
  • Have knowledge of recent literature support for the best ways to fixate Charcot arthropathy

    Javier La Fontaine, DPM

    About the Speaker:

    Javier La Fontaine, DPM

    Dr. Javier La Fontaine is the inaugural dean of the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine, having previously served as the associate dean of Academic Affairs. He has a rich background in podiatric medicine, including roles at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Texas A&M University. La Fontaine earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and has advanced degrees in Clinical Investigation and Education. He completed his internship and residency at UTHSCSA and is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

    Naomie Jean, DPM, MPH

    About the Speaker:

    Naomie Jean, DPM, MPH

    Dr. Naomie Jean, DPM, MPH, FACPM, is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine in the Department of Podiatric Medicine. She is currently serving the Rio Grande Valley community in South Texas as a Podiatric Physician & Surgeon. Previously, she practiced as a Podiatric Physician at a multispecialty group in New York City. Dr. Jean earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Education & Behavior, Cum Laude, from the University of Florida and a Master’s Degree in Public Health with a focus on Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Florida International University. She later obtained her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami, Florida, and completed her residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Jean is a Fellow of the American College of Podiatric Medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. In February 2025, she served as a lecturer and facilitator for Advanced Suturing & Amputation Skills at the Barts & London Surgical Society Conference. Her research interests include wound care, diabetic limb salvage, and public health.

    Dr. Alden Simmons, DPM

    About the Speaker:

    Dr. Alden Simmons, DPM

    Dr. Alden Simmons hails from the great state of Idaho. At the age of four, he announced he would someday be a leg doctor. After his residency at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center he completed the University of Louisville Reconstructive Foot/Ankle and Limb Salvage Fellowship. Dr. Simmons is the current director of podiatric education at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center in Temple, Texas. He is a devoted husband and father to four sons.
