  • Learning Objectives: At the end of the educational program, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the modern running shoe and the features intended functions
  • Formulate injury prevention strategies based on your knowledge of shoe technology and current literature
  • Define relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome
  • Understand a brief history of navicular stress fractures
  • Describe the osseous structure and vascular supply of the navicular
  • Understand the pathophysiology of, and evaluate conservative treatments for Achilles tendinosis

    About the Speaker:

    Michael Higham, DPM

    Dr. Michael Higham, DPM, AACFAS, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Podiatric Medicine. He graduated with honors from Midwestern University and completed his residency training at Baylor Scott & White. Dr. Higham is actively involved in academic mentorship, clinical education, and community outreach. He serves as Clinical Director for Special Olympics Texas and co-chairs the TPMA Online CME Committee. His interests in podiatric medicine stem from his time selling running shoes, competing in cross country and track and mentoring young runners.

    David Tietze, MD

    About the Speaker:

    David Tietze, MD

    David Tietze, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a primary care sports medicine physician. Dr. Tietze earned his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He performed his residency in internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center and completed a fellowship in sports medicine at Ohio State University Medical Center. Prior to his arrival at UT Southwestern, Dr. Tietze worked as an internal medicine physician at USMD Health System from 2015 to 2017. Before that, he served as a sports medicine physician at Texas Metroplex Institute Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Tietze is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

    Ronald Ray, DPM, FACFAS, WCC, PT

    About the Speaker:

    Ronald Ray, DPM, FACFAS, WCC, PT

    Dr. Ray practices in Great Falls, Montana at the Benefis Foot and Ankle Clinic, an affiliate of Benefis Health System. He is Fellowship trained in Reconstructive Surgery of the Ankle and Foot. Dr. Ray started his career by earning a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from California State University at Long Beach, in Long Beach California. His emphasis was on lower extremity rehabilitation and biomechanics. He graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in 1992 (now the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University). He completed a three-year Waldo Podiatric Surgical Residency Program in 1995, which included an AO Fellowship with Sigvard T. Hansen, Jr. at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, Washington. He is Past-President of the Montana Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA 1999 – 2001 & 2019 – 2021). He has been the Director of Continuing Education for the MPMA since 2002. He is Past President of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS) and was a member of the ABFAS board of directors for six years. He is the Past Chair of the Surgical Skills Committee for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). He is a member of the Annual Scientific Committee for ACFAS. He is a Faculty and Podiatric committee member for AO North America. Dr. Ray is the President and co-founder of Race Montana, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Great Falls, Montana. The organization promotes, organizes, and directs fitness events in Central Montana.

    Seth Ashraf, DPM, AACFAS

    About the Speaker:

    Seth Ashraf, DPM, AACFAS

    I am a fellowship trained foot/ankle surgeon specializing in sports medicine, forefoot and rearfoot/ankle reconstruction, as well as general foot and ankle medicine and surgery. I grew up in northern California and received my DPM degree from the California School of Podiatric Medicine in Oakland, CA. I then went to the east coast for residency where I trained under the renowned Dr. Guido Laporta at Guthrie-Lourdes Hospital PMSR/RRA in NY state. In residency I received extensive training in complex deformity correction, limb salvage, and general podiatry practice. Additionally, I have published multiple studies on a wide range of foot/ankle topics ranging from sports medicine to complex rearfoot reconstruction. I am currently completing my fellowship at San Antonio Sports Medicine Associates in San Antonio, Texas under director Dr. Marque Allen, DPM, FACFAS. Outside of work, I enjoy working out, swimming, bicycling, hiking, playing sports, carpentry, and playing guitar.

    Seth Ashraf, DPM, AACFAS

    About the Speaker:

    Marque Allen, DPM, FACFAS

    Marque Allen, DPM, FACFAS, is a podiatrist and double board-certified foot and ankle surgeon with over 20 years of experience in podiatry and sports medicine. He practices at Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio. Dr. Allen earned his undergraduate degree from Rowan University and his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Temple University. He completed five years of training in foot and ankle surgery, internship at the University of Pennsylvania and a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Health System. He also completed a fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Allen is a member of several professional organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine.
